The last weeks are the orientations for the new student of Columbia University.
I have not attended any universities of USA in my life. That's why I think everything in Columbia is great. The administration provides the detailed information about international student, MA program, health care, information technology, and libraries. Also Columbia offers many programs to let newcomers make friends and get familiar with the NYC. I think these efforts are great.
Although I have no much interests in making new friends, I still enjoy the environment when all young people get together and talk to the people who might become their lifetime friends.
Why do I have no interests doing that? I ask myself and find some reasons.
1. I am a MA student and have to support myself in the next two years. But many other Chinese students come to CU with scholarship from CU. I am not at the same situation as them. They could never understand my situation well.
2. My focus is Chinese history, women and gender's studies, film studies and history of science in particular. Most of them will major in science, economics and finance in CU. Maybe they like watching movies and reading books on Chinese history. They still believe these knowledge is useless for the practical life. We do not share much in common. Why should I need to know them then?
3. Time goes as fast as the light. I am 28 years old already. I do not waste my life in the bored social party. My life is to produce the new knowledge that other people can not or would not like do.
Maybe there are other reasons that I would not like to know them. But I believe I will have new friends who I like to know.

Understand you well, because I was an arts graduate too. In my opinion, chinese have been told better how to make a living than how to make a life. They are practical people ( I am a Chinese too). Try to get some other friends?
